REWALKING THE PATH OF THE SAINTS

Christina Akesson, Chara Lagou, Nima Morkoc

The objective of the project is to exploit recent scanning technologies for the transformation of real-world objects into elements of virtual landscapes and to investigate the use of such sceneries as promotion tools for the cultural heritage. In the context of this project the FARO focus 3D X-330 was used to scan the Romanesque cloister of the Fraumünster in Zurich. The reliefs on the pillars of the cloister, representing the patron saints of the city were the inspiration for the work that followed to showcase the legend of Felix, Regula and Exuperantius, who are said to have walked forty steps after their decapitation with their own heads in their hands, up to the place where Grossmünster is nowadays located. More specifically, a virtual symbolic world was created in blender and fly through videos were produced to present the forty-step walk as experienced by the each of the saints, the passerby and the scanner. Furthermore, a board-game was designed in the concept of the good and the evil, creating the sense of passing from reality to virtuality and back to reality. Finally, further experimentations followed, such as the forecast of the future look of the cloister.
